Case Study: Reaching an Audience of Political Thought Leaders
Strategy
Seed Media Group worked with the client and their public relations agency to develop a strategy for reaching key policymakers in Washington, DC. We identified key issues in science and developed a series of salon-style discussions held on Capitol Hill for an audience of Congressional leaders and representatives of science-based NGOs. Each session brought together a leading scientist and a public policy expert to speak about a pressing issue in science – both the research behind it as well as the legal, regulatory, and funding implications.
In addition to the live event series, the custom integrated program included:
- Production of video from each discussion
- A dedicated ‘Science and Society’ forum on ScienceBlogs, which aired videos and excerpts from each event – giving the ScienceBlogs audience access to these private discussions and enabling them to join in the discussion
- A dedicated password-protected site for Congressional staffers to view the discussions and pose questions
- Custom designed print and online elements promoting the custom forum and event series
Results
The event series garnered attention and praise from Congressional leaders, members of the House Committee on Science and Technology, and a number of Washington, DC-based science advocacy
groups. The events were well attended by a high-level audience of policymakers, and the videos from each discussion enjoyed great success on ScienceBlogs; to date they have been viewed more than 3000 times.
