Assistant Managing Editor

Description:

Assists Managing Editor in supervising the operational, editorial, and production activities of Seed magazine.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Works with editors and art staff to secure rights for articles and art, and works with other departments to coordinate usage across platforms.
  • As resident copy chief, is ultimately responsible for the timely and efficient organization of copy editing and proofreading during the production of every issue, trafficking materials between in-house editors, freelance copy editors, and art department.
  • Ensures that proper procedures are followed with manuscript preparation and trafficking, etc., and mentors staff on proper proofreading procedures/notations.
  • Has ownership of the Seed style guide, working with other editors to refine and update the guide. Enforces house style.
  • Manages invoices for editorial and art departments and tracks all items and associated costs for each issue.
  • Works with Managing Editor to enforce deadlines.
  • Updates and distributes the lineup and book map for each issue.

Qualifications:

College degree or equivalent experience required. At least three years of journalistic experience including researching, reporting, and substantive copy editing. Demonstrated knowledge of journalistic principles and techniques. Demonstrated abilities in organizational and project management, including the ability to utilize project resources and staff effectively within established schedules, budgets, and other guidelines. Excellent interpersonal skills as necessary to deal with staff, and other business contacts inside and outside SMG. A knowledge of and interest in science is desirable.
